{this is my first tiny glimpse at where my husband spends most of his days}
My parents had quite the welcome to Cartagena, with it being a fiesta-filled holiday weekend, but their cultural experience became more in-depth as we made our way to the island of Baru. We drove through some pretty rough areas and at one point we saw barefoot children holding up a piece of rope, acting as a barricade or toll in the road. We were expected to pay these children. If one did not, they had people waiting with buckets of water to throw at you. We drove through about six of these. Lots of entrepreneurial spirit in that little village. Finally we reached the ferry. No one spoke up, but I have a feeling at this point more than 50% of us were wondering if this resort was going to be worth risking our lives on the so called ferry.
Thankfully we made it safely and were enjoying the sun and drinks in no time. After living in Colombia for over 18 months, Matt and I have learned that nothing is guaranteed, so we weren't sure what to expect from the resort. On this occasion we were pleasantly surprised. This is a good thing. The resort was new with beautiful views and several great pools. As a bonus they poured a strong drink.
After spending the afternoon at the pool relaxing and tuning out all the Spanish around us, {we were the only Americans at the resort} we enjoyed some cocktails before dinner.
Our evening ended with Matt schmoozing his way into a restaurant on the property that we did not have reservations for. Even more impressive is that he was able to schmooze in Spanish.
That boy has learned a lot more than engineering and construction in the last year and a half...
